In pre-Columbian time, the Taino Indians were natives of present day Puerto Rico, Hispañola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and parts of the Bahamas and Cuba.  They had a rich and varied culture.  They were probably the first Americans that Columbus (Colón) met in the new world.
